Liquid Smoke Business!

Two years ago in 2006, the issue of formalin as preservative spread out. Whereas, formalin is prohibited by the Food and Drug Control Agency (BPOM) since it triggers neurological depression, retarding blood circulation, and urinating blood. The issue had provoked Imam Nurhidayat's business instinct. He burned his VCO processing waste-coconut shell, flowed the smoke through stainless steel pipe, and processed it in condensation tube becoming liquid smoke. He marketed 2.300 liters of liquid smoke that he valued IDR20.000 per liter. The production cost is only IDR7.000 per liter. Accordingly, his turnover is IDR46-million in a month and he gained IDR29,9-million net profit.

Besides liquid smoke, another potential processing product of coconut waste are cocofiber or husk fiber and cocopeat or husk dust. Many exporters like Roeswan Roesli and H Zulhaidir Rawawi who are overwhelmed by the demand of those two commodities. The high demand for liquid smoke, cocofiber, and cocopeat is due to their multi-benefit and superiority. Liquid smoke, as an example, is useful as preservative, pesticide, fertilizer, and medicine. On the other hand, cocofiber can be used as raw material for spring bed, particle board, and car upholstery filler.
